Getting to Know Poverty

I have helped Habitat for Humanity to do a survey on people living around rail road in Tuol Seng Kae District. It was a month ago that I got the opportunity to get in touch with people in that community. The reason we did this survey is that people in that area are very likely to be forced to move out of their homes in the near future because of the rail road construction. The plan to restore the railway has been confirm years ago; however, they could not manage to get these people out of this area and they could not manage the fund from ADB very well. Therefore, the railway project has not gone well until today. By asking 60 families the same questionnaire, I was surprised that the level of information people in the same get is not the same. Some know clearly about what is happening and even advocate for what they want. On the other hand, some other do not understand their situation and what possibly will happen to them. It might show how information accessibility is unbalan...

Higher Wage Is Not Always Better

Living in a 2-meter-by-4-meter room which costs $25 per month, Chorn Malen shares the room and the rent with two other factory workers. The only furniture in that room is a cloth-closet, she has no television nor rice cooker. Besides the rent, she has to pay around $5 for electricity and running water bills every month. Working at a local factory, she is now happier even though her salary is lower than the amount she got when she was working in Malaysia. Nevertheless, she still hope for a raise in her wage as a garment worker in Cambodia. Malen is a garment worker at six-story factory. Her responsibility in the factory is transporting final products (shoes) from 2nd floor to 3rd flood to the stamping department. Born in a famer family in Kompong Chhnang province, Ms. Malen spent most of her childhood in farmland rather in school. There are four children in her family. Unfortunately, one of her sibling died because of serious illness. Among all, only two of them have finished hi...

Rising Film Makers

Today I have a great honor to join Film Camp Short Film Premiere 2014 at Platinum cinema. There are six short films in total, and each sheds its own light on the screen. Personally, I think the horror comedy film (The Last Page) is the hardest to make. However, they did a great job in combining those element together in a film that is less than 10 minutes. Another one that caught my attention is "Please Don't Leave". The story confused the audience in the beginning, then revealed the truth in the end which is different from audience's assumption. At the same time, it also keeps its genre(romance) clear. Surprisingly, neither the judges nor the votes of the audience made these two films the winner of the event. Instead, the drama film "The Girl and the Grandma" won the judges' hearts. Well, the meaning of the film is educational, since their protagonist became a good girl in the end. However, the story telling skill in it is not as good as others....

Review on "Creating Your Own Destiny – How to Get Exactly What You Want Out of Life"

Introduction In the introduction, the author mainly wants to persuade reader to follow this book and become success like he did. There are 8 quotes from famous people to support the author’s idea. He said anyone can take control of his/her life and reach ultimate goal. I don’t really agree with this saying. The reason I disagree is very simple. He, Patrick, overlooks the miner factors around people’s lives. Family situation, unexpected accident, sudden change in life, these are some elements that change our plan or even lead our lives to a completely different route. The author said this book is a record of his dream came true, and I do believe it is. However, not everyone is suitable and successful with the same strategies he used. Therefore, we should adjust some points in this book to the reality we live in. First Chapter – Visualize Your Dream Examples are raised just to illustrate that to achieve your dream, first you must know what you want to achieve. I totally agree...
